This motorcycle tour through Mongolia's central provinces is mainly off-road and offers the opportunity to see just what an amazing and varied country this is. Ride round the shore of the "White Lake", climb the "Khorgo" Volcano and ride through the town of "Kharkhorin" which was once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire. Motorbike touring in Mongolia is a great way to experience Central Asia, but you need some off-road experience.
This1650 kmroute will be a challenge, as we have revised it to avoid the new black-topped road and go an alternative way on rough and remote tracks. Even the first day is 400 km off-road, requiring stamina and strength. All nights are spent at GER camps where the accommodation is in traditional round white felt yurts, and there are restaurant and bathroom facilities.

Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Evening meet the tour leader and rest of group for pre tour meeting. The meeting is about the day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.
Set out early morning and ride south eastwards, initially on the main asphalt road to 'Zuun Mod' town, then off into the wilderness. Outside the city most people live the traditional nomadic lifestyle, moving several times a year with their herds of animals and we pass through only a couple of villages along the way. Arrive 'Khogno Khan' in the late evening. Overnight at the foot of the dramatic granite mountain.
Ride "Khogno Khan" to "Kharkhorin" and spend an hour or two at 'Erdene Zuu'. This is an active monastery and we will probably see the resident monks performing their morning rituals. Ride through the district of "Tuvshuruulekh" and "Tsenkher" to arrive at "Tsetserleg" town for a late lunch. Cross over "Bulgan" mountain pass to the ger camp beside the "Tamir" river and the sacred 'Taikhir Chuluu'. Overnight ger camp.
Riding mainly on rough jeep tracks, we travel across the fertile rolling hills of Arkhangi province, passing through the village of 'Chuluut'. Ride on to "Tariat" village and stay at a ger camp beside the river at the base of "Chuluut" gorge. Overnight ger camp.
Ride clockwise round the lake to reach the salt water 'Country Lake' nearby which are several ancient 'Stone Sculptures'. There are usually a number of nomadic families here and you will see how they live in this harsh environment. Arrive at the 'Ger Camp' in the afternoon and relax by the lake. Overnight ger camp.
Depart from the ger camp on the shores of the 'White Lake' and visit the Cave of the "Yellow Dog", then climb to the top of the 'Khorgo Volcano'. Walk around the rim of the crater for fantastic views of the whole area including the lake and surrounding black lava field. Then ride back to "Ikh Tamir" on tarmac road, stopping on the way at "Chuluut" River Gorge. Overnight Ikh Tamir ger camp.
From "Ikh Tamir" ride along the valley following the "Tamir" river eastwards to "Ogii Nuur" lake. This is an area of some historical significance since the princes of Mongolia’s Turkic era (7th century) were based here and even now there are a number of ancient monuments including 'Deer Stones' to be seen. Cross the "Tamir" river on a 'Raft' and arrive early afternoon for lunch. Overnight ger camp near the lake.
This is the most varied motorcycle route, covering mountain and steppe zones, including dramatic granite features, Buddhist temples, the original capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire, lakes with water birds and fish, a river crossing by raft, ancient nomadic sculptures and open plain riding.
All the overnight ger camps are set in absolutely beautiful locations.

The places you will see along the way:
The "White Lake" at an altitude of 2060 meters above sea level was created when torrents of lava from the nearby Khorgo volcano blocked the north and south rivers, damming the lake.
Khorgo Volcano is a dead volcano with a crater 200 meters wide and 100 meters deep. The mountain is covered with basalt and the northern slope with Siberian larch trees.
"Taikhar Chuluu" rock is a mysterious pinnacle of granite, 20 meters high, rising abruptly from the surrounding grassland beside the Tamir River. The sides are covered with ancient graffiti.
"I had a fantastic time – lots of fun, awesome country, people and off road riding and a great “camaraderie” amongst the group, even throughout those gruelling cold wet rain days 😊.
Thank you to you and all the team for organizing such a great tour for us."
