Middle Gobi Motorcycle Trail

On this circular route of 4 days riding we travel more than 1000km and will visit the unusual granite mountain at Baga Gazriin Chuluu, temple remains at Ongi Khiid and another beautiful mountain, Zorgol Khairkhan nearby the sand dunes at Ovurburd Els. Most of the population in the countryside still live a nomadic or semi-nomadic existence, moving frequently with their herds of animals. Nevertheless, in recent years many families have moved to the city, so we may ride for a considerable distance across the wild and beautiful land without encountering people or vehicles.

Riding Terrain and Facilities

On this circular route of 4 days riding we travel more than 1000 km across hilly grasslands, open plains and rocky mountain zones. Accommodation will be at traditional GER camps with restaurant and shower facilities. Mostly the trail follows rough jeep tracks, but we do ride a little distance on tarmac and a new road linking Ulaanbaatar to the Gobi Desert has recently been completed which we travel on at the end of the last day. Some days are long and require stamina.

  Take-Into Consideration !

"Please note that nowadays there are a few competitor motorcycle companies offering the same or similar tours. Some have copied our "Middle Gobi Motorcycle Trail" and website content, given it a new name and advertised it as their own tour, at a cheaper price, perhaps without having tried and tested the route"

MIDDLE GOBI TOUR MAP

Circular route starting from Ulaanbaatar and going to the western edge of the Gobi Desert. Mongolia is a great place for a motorcycle tour, but it is only suitable for confident riders with off-road experience. The routes are too remote and the terrain too rough for beginners. Sometimes we will stay in traditional ger camps, but in parts of the country there are no facilities for tourists so we camp in the wilderness.

Day By Day Itinerary

This itinerary is suitable for experienced riders, preferably with some off-road experience

Arrive in  'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group. Start pre tour meeting. Meeting talks about day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.

Make an early start to get out of Ulaanbaatar city and onto the road leading south to the Gobi. The road is black-topped for a while, then soon becomes a rough jeep track as it crosses the green rolling hills of Tuv (“Central”) Province. Ride on to   'Baga Gazriin Chuluu', a mountain of unusual granite rocks which are home to ibex,   'Marmots', steppe fox and plenty of   'Birds' of prey. Overnight ger camp.

Ride through Mandalgov, the capital town of Dundgov Province and continue across the open rolling hills and steppe of  'Middle Gobi' to the rocky cliffs beside the Ongi river where the   'Ger Camp' is located. Overnight ger camp.

Ride northwards along the rough gravel tracks of Dundgov. Pass by   'Zorgol Khairkhan' , an area of big granite rock formations that resemble sleeping dinosaurs silhouetted against the sky. Overnight ger camp at   'Ovurburd Els'.

As we return to Ulaanbaatar, the landscape becomes gradually greener and more mountainous. Even close to the city people still live the   'Traditional Lifestyle' there are more horses and less camels than we encountered in the Gobi. We expect to arrive at around midday.  'Overnight hotel'.

Departure.

(Tour price is based on a group of 4 people. Motorbike rent cost USD $130 per day including fuel)
