Great Khan Motorcycle Trail

13 - 17 September 2020 only USD $1395

This is an amazing 3-day trip to the east of Ulaanbaatar including forested mountain passes, remote steppe and dramatic landscapes. The journey begins riding along the Tuul river to Terelj National Park, then a little further to the gigantic silver statue of Genghis Khan on a horse. Beyond this we ride eastward into Khentii province and through a valley where it is believed that Genghis Khan established his original capital. It is also celebrated as the place where the book “Secret History of the Mongols” was written. Wooden bridges in various states of repair cross the Kherlen river and its tributaries and the route crosses some wild high steppe and passes by a few small lakes and villages before returning to Ulaanbaatar. The total riding distance is 600km's, of which approximately 90% is off-road on rough jeep tracks. Most of the route is an area of Mongolia rarely visited by tourists and there is no formal accommodation so we will camp in tents and take all equipment, including a kitchen tent.

Genghis Statue

This statue of Genghis Khan is located 50 km from Ulaanbaatar. It is 40 metres high and has a conference centre in the base and an elevator in the horse’s legs for visitors to reach the head. It is the world's tallest horse statue.

Secret History

Khuduu Aral is a plain 30km long and 20km wide on the meander of the Kherlen river. It is closely connected with the historical work "The Secret History of the Mongols" and there is a monument to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the event.

Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Terelj is a picturesque place of high cliffs eroded in granite of Mesozoic age creating a wonderful landscape of granite "tors". The area is a National Park covering 2864 square kilometers and has enjoyed State protection since 1993.

Kherlen River

The Kherlen river has its source in the Khan Khentii mountain range and belongs to the Pacific basin system. It flows for 1624 kilometers and drains into the lake of Dalai Nuur in China.

According to the Mongol scholar Damdinsuren, it was in Delgerkhan district that the three great Khans, Ogodei, Monkhe and Yeson Temur were crowned. It was the oldest population centre in Mongolia and used as a supply base for the Mongol army.

Mongolian Buryats

Near to the Russian border with Mongolia live many people of the Buryat ethnic group. Their dress is different to that of the majority Khalkh Mongols. They form 1.7% of the total population and are a popular and hard working group.

Each night will be wild camping (tents provided) and support vehicles will carry the equipment and luggage. Support staff travel with us, including a cook to prepare the meals. Mostly the trail follows rough jeep tracks, but we do ride a little distance on tarmac.

  • We wish that we had more time to spend in Mongolia. What a fascinating place. Not only the Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar, but the many mini - Naadam Festivals we encountered in the countryside as well as the people and scenery were fantastic...

  • "We really enjoyed our time in Mongolia with the off-road experience and closeness to nature. The experience at the family ger was an emotional one. It struck a chord with me, somewhere deep inside. I could see the sense in their simple way of life, which I have not really been able to see in ours in the west"
