Mongolia's ancient traditions have largely remained intact despite centuries of domination by China and Russia. Their nomadic lifestyle has changed little since the days of Genghis Khaan, and the Tibetan form of Buddhism is being revived following the Communist purges of the last century.
The original centre of Buddhism in Mongolia was built on the ruins of Genghis Khaan’s capital in Kharkhorin. The journey offers the chance to see all types of scenery – mountain, desert and steppe, and also go to the natural reserve where wild "Takhi" horses are kept in their natural habitat.
Tour Khustain Nuruu Natural Reserve and some monasteries in Arkhangai province, Central Mongolia
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and go to hotel. Afternoon enjoy looking around Ulaanbaatar city. Overnight in hotel.
Jeep to Khustain Nuruu Natural Reserve where 'Wild Prezwalski horses' are kept in their natural habitat. See some of the horses reared in this successful project and look at the exhibition about the history of it. Overnight ger camp.
Drive across beautiful open countryside to reach 'Khogno Khan' a dramatic granite rock mountain overlooking the open steppe. Hike over the mountain to visit a small 'Temple ' built beside the ruins of a much older temple. Overnight ger camp.
After breakfast drive to Kharkhorin, the valley where Genghis Khan's capital was located. Visit 'Erdene Zuu' an active Buddhist monastery and one of the largest in the country. Overnight ger camp beside the Orkhon river.
Jeep to visit another monastery, this one much smaller, Shankhiin Hiid". This is associated with a famous reincarnate Lama known as Zanabazar who was a famous religious leader, politician, poet and sculptor in the sixteenth century. Afternoon drive to 'Elsen Tasarkhai' known as "Little Gobi", an area of big golden sand dunes and desert vegetation. Overnight ger camp.
Return by jeep to Ulaanbaatar, stopping along the way for a 'picnic lunch'. Overnight hotel.
Walking city tour to visit some of the most interesting sights in Ulaanbaatar including 'Gandentegchilen Hiid' with its huge golden statue of Chenresig and the Chojin Lam temple with it's bizarre religious artifacts, including some bronze sculptures made by Zanabazar. Overnight hotel.
