KTM 450 EXC Motorbike in Mongolia

Real dirt bike riders will already know that such a bike can readily meet the challenge. Its light weight, electronic and kick start capability, height and reliability, make it ideally suited to Mongolia's rough and remote location.

We have been running motorbike tours since 2005 and now have a total of 20 bikes including KTM 450 EXC bikes and Yamaha WR's. We gradually replace older bikes with newer models. For the first few years we were using Yamaha WR250 motorbikes. They were great - but now we've gone one better. We use KTM 450 EXC off-road enduro bikes for our scheduled motorbike trips in Mongolia. All our motorcycles are fully protected with the necessary frame guards, sump & engine guard, hand guards & radiator guards.

Motorbike Tours in Mongolia

Mongolia is a great place for a motorcycle tour, but it is only suitable for confident riders with off-road experience. The routes are too remote and the terrain too rough for beginners. Sometimes we will stay in traditional ger camps, but in parts of the country there are no facilities for tourists so we camp in the wilderness.

2017 Summer Group Tours

We organize several fixed date group trips to Mongolia including mountain biking, motorcycling, horse riding, trekking and cultural trips. You are welcome to join as an individual or if there are several friends together. This is a good way to travel in Mongolia if you want the companionship of others and to meet some interesting people.

Motorbike Riding Safety

In the case of a serious medical emergency, we may have to call the helicopter rescue service to take the injured person to hospital in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. We have a contract with "A JET AVATION" who are on standby 24 hours a day, but before being mobilised, the rescue should be authorised by the patient's travel insurance company.

Safety

Above all else, safety is our most important concern and motorcycling is a dangerous activity.

Introduction

We will be riding in remote areas far from good medical facilities. Therefore you must follow all our instructions with regard to protective clothing and safe riding. Our motorcycle tours in Mongolia are not suitable for beginners and the more experienced you are at off-road riding, the better you will enjoy the trip. Get in as much practice as you can before the tour and if necessary take some lessons. Understand that this is not a RACE or COMPETITION. See more information about safety issue click here: SECTION 13 . Mongolia is a great country for off-road riding and our tours offer a wonderful opportunity to see the way of life of the nomadic people of Central Asia. To ensure the smooth running of our motorcycle tours everyone is obliged to follow these instructions and to abide by our tour leader.

In the case of a serious medical emergency, we may have to call the helicopter rescue service to take the injured person to hospital in Ulaanbaatar. We have a contract with 'Central Mongolian Airways' who are on standby 24 hours a day, but before being mobilised, the rescue should be authorised by the patient's travel insurance company.

White Old Man (paper mache) 19th Century "Fine Art Museum" ©OTMT Check the conditions of your insurance provider should such a situation arise. When purchasing travel insurance, make sure that the company knows that you will be riding a motorcycle of 450cc. Also be sure that you comply with their requirements relating to your driving licence. If you do not have a driving licence in your own country that is specifically endorsed for riding a motorcycle, it is likely that the insurance company would not pay out in the event of a claim.

We carry with us a good supply of medicine'KED Fracture Immobiliser Kits' and 'FERNO Fracture Immobiliser Kits'   'KED Extrication Device'   'Emergency Foldable Stretcher' which is used in emergency medical situations. Usually the tour is accompanied by a doctor who has spent his life working with the Mongolian Defence and is highly experienced in treating traumatic injuries.

Everyone must have good enough protective clothing otherwise we cannot allow you to ride, for your own safety and the smooth running of the tour. Proper "OFF-ROAD" rigid boots are essential; please do not arrive with ordinary road riding boots. We have a few pairs available to hire, but might not have your size if not ordered in advance. A helmet, full chest and back body armour, knee and elbow pads are required.

Ulaanbaatar is not a particularly dangerous city at all, but you should exercise the same caution here as you would in any other large city. Pickpockets and bag/ jacket snatchers are disappointingly common in crowded areas. Pickpockets tend to work in groups of three and are usually easy to spot if you keep your eyes open; they soon disperse when they realise they have been sprung and are easily embarrassed if you make a fuss. Be particularly careful in the Narantuul (Black) Market, in the Central Post Office, in the Mercury Market, and around Gandan Monastery.

It is safer to keep your money on your person in a hidden pocket, not in a separate bag or rucksack, and definitely not in the back pocket of your trousers !

After dark it is not advisable to walk alone and if visiting night clubs or bars always be on your guard.

Motorbike Off Road Protective Kit

Everyone must have good enough protective clothing otherwise we cannot allow you to ride, for your own safety and the smooth running of the tour. Proper off-road rigid boots are essential. Please do not arrive with ordinary 'Road Riding Boots'. A helmet, full chest and back body armour, knee and elbow pads are required.

Words from the Tour Leader...

There are just a few more safety points which you must understand and remember.

No doubt you all have family and friends back home who will be wanting you back all in one piece. You have to take responsibility for yourself and besides that, enjoy your trip. It will be an amazing adventure, but much less so if you are injured. Also, take note that Mongolian traffic police have a zero tolerance policy on drinking and driving, so do not drink heavily on the evening you arrive in Ulaanbaatar. What a shame if you can't start riding the next morning.

Support Vehicles & Equipment

All our vehicles are owned and maintained by us and driven by our own company drivers. We do not hire vehicles from outside, nor do we use drivers who we do not know. Our vehicles include the Kamaz Expedition bus and Russian UAZ Forgons as well as Land Rover Defender 130's and 110's, Reynolds Boughton RB44 (Dodge 50 Cargo Trucks).

Equipment

Tour Equipment in Mongolia

Over the years we have got together a lot of equipment to enable the smooth running of the tours. Through our own experience we have chosen models and brands which are the most suitable for their purpose in Mongolian conditions. Since most of our equipment is purchased and imported from the UK, we prefer good quality items which last longer and withstand heavy usage. Some equipment is available to rent by prior arrangement. We only hire equipment to persons who are doing a tour with us.

SATELLITE PHONE

For our motorcycle tours in Mongolia where travel is in remote parts of the country with no mobile phone reception, we have satellite phones to use in case of emergency. We use the "Iridium" network which has complete international coverage and we work with Monsat Unitel, Iridium's official distributor in Mongolia so that we can be sure of having reliable communications from anywhere in Mongolia.

TWO-WAY RADIOS

All our support vehicles are fitted with "Motorola" and "Vertex" long distance two-way radios so that there will be contact between the tour leader and drivers for distances of up to fifty kilometres. The equipment is supplied by Wild Talk radio communication service provider .

SERVICE TOOLS

We have the tools and equipment required for the servicing and maintenance of our motorbikes. Motorcycle mechanics travel with us on every tour to keep the motorbikes in good order throughout.

  • Inmarsat Satellite Phone
  • Vertex Standart VHF Mobile Radio
  • Motorola GP300 Handheld Radios
  • Mobile Fuel Pump
  • Motorcycle MX Stand

CAMPING EQUIPMENT "TENTS"

We have high performance Expedition Force Ten "Baltoro" and the Vango "Storm 300" Three Man 4 Season Tent which can withstand summer snow storms up in the high mountains of Mongolia, fierce wind and rain. They have an entrance at both ends to allow air through on very hot days, and mosquito netting to protect from insects.

MOTORBIKE HELMETS

We have some off-road helmets available for hire if you don't want to bring your own. All our helmets comply with British Standard BS 6658:1985 BSI, Kitemark and European Union level.

MOTORBIKE BOOTS

We have some pairs of off-road motorcycle boots available for rent: Six Six One Flight boots, Fox and Diadora in various sizes. It is essential that every rider wears proper rigid knee length enduro / motocross style boots for this kind of riding. Anyone whose boots are unsuitable will be asked to rent one of our boots. This is in the interest of safety.

If you are comparing different tour companies and trying to decide which is the best, you must ask the following questions: Who owns and maintains the motorbikes ? Will everyone ride the same model of bike ? Will an experienced mechanic travel with the group ? What kind of spare parts and equipment do they have ? Have they done the route before as a motorcycle tour ? What kind of support vehicles will go with the group ? When you have asked all these questions, you will be in a good position to compare the prices of different companies.
