An off-road motorcycle tour through Mongolia's central provinces is the opportunity to see just what an amazing place this is. You can swim in the beautiful White Lake, climb the Khorgo Volcano and ride through the town of Kharkhorin which was once the capital of Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire. Motorbike touring in Mongolia is a great way to experience Central Asia, but you need some off-road experience.
The White Lake is located in a volcanic area of Arkhangai province and was created when volcanic lava damned the "Suman" river and cut a large gorge through the basalt. It is a beautiful lake, surrounded by high mountains and popular with colonies of wild birds including geese, ducks and swans.
Khorgo, an extinct volcano in the district of Tariat overlooks Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, the White Lake. It is an easy walk to the top from where one can look down into the 100 meter crater and walk around the edge of it. It is interesting to see how volcanic activity thousands of years ago has changed the landscape.
This lake, 25 square kilometers in size, is located not far from the Tsetserleg - Ulaanbaatar road. It attracts large numbers of migratory birds.
Nearby our ger camp in Ikh Tamir village, beside the Khoit-Tamir river, is an unusual rock known as "Taikhir Chuluu". It is 16 meters tall, standing in an otherwise empty flat plain. The subject of local legend, it is covered in ancient inscriptions which possible date back to the stone age, as well as "tamga" clan marks and texts written in Chinese, Tibetan, Manchu and other languages.
There are Iron age "Deer Stones" and some "Man Stones" in Arkhangai province dating back to the period of the Tuje Turks. The man stone statues are human figures shown standing holding a cup symbolising their participation in the funeral banquet organised in their own honour.
The town of Kharkhorin in the Orkhon valley was the place chosen by Genghis Khan as capital of the Mongol Empire in the twelfth century.
This '1700km' route will be a challenge, although part of the road between Ulaanbaatar and Kharkhorin has now been black-topped. We ride from one traditional ger camp to the next, staying in places of exceptional beauty or importance.
Ride from Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin and on to the White Lake then return via Ugii Lake
Arrive in 'Ulaanbaatar' and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group. Start pre tour meeting. Meeting talks about day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.
Set out early morning and ride south eastwards, initially on the main asphalt road to 'Zuun Mod' town, then off into the wilderness. Outside the city most people live the traditional nomadic lifestyle, moving several times a year with their herds of animals and we pass through only a couple of villages along the way. Arrive 'Khogno Khan' in the late evening. Overnight at the foot of the dramatic granite mountain.
Ride to Kharkhorin and spend an hour or two at 'Erdene Zuu'. This is an active monastery and we will probably see the resident monks performing their morning rituals. After lunch ride through Tsetserleg town and over Bulgan mountain to Ikh Tamir. Overnight ger camp beside the Tamir river and the sacred 'Taikhir Chuluu' rock.
Riding mainly on rough jeep tracks, we travel across the fertile rolling hills of Arkhangi province, passing through the village of Chuluut. Ride on to Tariat village and over the bridge into the Khorgo and White Lake National Park. Go around the extinct volcano and over a small pass to the ger camp on the shores of the 'White Lake'.
Follow the rocky trail that runs along the northern shore of the and a little further to the salt water 'Country Lake' nearby which are several ancient 'Stone Sculptures'. There are usually a number of nomadic families here and you will see how they live in this harsh environment. Return to the 'Ger Camp' and afternoon relax by the lake.
Start the day by visiting the Cave of the Yellow Dog and climbing to the top of the 'Khorgo' volcano.Walk around the rim of the crater for fantastic views of the whole area including the lake and surrounding black lava field. Then ride back to Ikh Tamir on tarmac road, stopping on the way at 'Chuluut River Gorge'. Overnight Ikh Tamir ger camp.
From Ikh Tamir ride along the valley following the Tamir river eastwards to Ugii Nuur lake. This is an area of some historical significance since the princes of Mongolia’s Turkic era (7th century) were based here and even now there are a number of ancient monuments including 'Deer Stones' to be seen. Cross the Tamir river on a 'Raft' and arrive early afternoon for lunch. Overnight ger camp near the lake.
