Trekking Tours in Mongolia

For some of the best hiking in Central Asia, join us on a trek in the mountains of the Altai, Khovsgol or Khangai where you will be delighted by the unspoiled beauty and remoteness that Mongolia offers. You can join our July scheduled trek to Mount Kharkhiraa, or if you have a group of friends (4 or more people) we can organise a tailor-made trip for you.

The Altai Mountains of Western Mongolia

The Altai mountain range stretches from north to south along the western border with Kazakhstan and China. Many of the peaks are eternally snow-covered and even the lower valleys are only passable on foot during the brief summer. Many of the people living in this part of the country are Mongolian Kazakh's. They are Moslem not Buddhist, speak their own language and there are many cultural differences. The gers of the Kazakh's are larger and taller than those of the Mongolian nomads.

Mount "Kharkhiraa"

The remote snow capped peaks of Uvs province are the setting for a truly wild and adventurous trek in Western Mongolia. We use camels to carry our luggage and equipment as we hike over high mountain passes, impressive plateau and along spectacular river valleys of the Altai mountains.

Hiking & Trekking Routes

Although much of Mongolian is vast open steppe or desert, there are a number of mountain areas that are good for trekking. In the north, close to the Russian border, is Lake Khovsgol to the west of which lie the Khoridol Saridag mountains. They are tall and steep sided; quite often there are no clear trails to follow. Central Mongolia is dominated by the Khangai mountains which stretch from the edge of the Gobi Desert northwards. These mountains, although of high altitude, are more like rolling green hills and climbs and descents are not so steep. On the western side of Mongolia are the Altai mountains, quite high with trails usually following river valleys. Other mountainous areas include the Khentii mountains east of Ulaanbaatar and the Gurvansaikhan National Park in the Gobi Desert.

Tour Grading

You have to be fit to do a trek in Mongolia and most treks are classed as moderate. If you do a tailor-made trek the grade can be adjusted for you. The altitude is always below 3000 metres.

Tour Group Size?

Our scheduled group tours as well as tailor-made trips require a minimum of 4 people to run. Theoretically there is not a maximum group size, but practically speaking there are unlikely to be more than 10 people.

Mountain Bike Routes ©BikeMongolia On the scheduled Mount Kharkhiraa trek every day we must complete the planned walking distance because we have to meet the driver at the end of the trail on the 8th day. Otherwise we won't get back to Ulaangom for the return flight to Ulaanbaatar. That means you must be capable of trekking 15 - 20km per day on rough ground, sometimes steep uphill or downhill, for a week. Once you start, there's no going back nor options to shorten the route.

Mongolian people rarely walk anywhere - why would you if you can travel by horse so much quicker ? That means there isn't a network of clearly defined trails as there are in some countries. We will often be walking on rough ground, perhaps in bushy grass or on stony tracks, and other times on rocky jeep tracks.

As any experienced hiker knows, the most important thing is strong comfortable walking boots. The ground is often rocky, so boots which protect the ankles are better. In the early mornings the long grass will be wet, or all day if raining, so waterproof boots and gaiters will keep you dry. Walking poles are useful, especially for river crossings. Camels carry all the tents and camping equipment, including your main luggage, but a decent sized and comfortable day-back is a necessity as the camels are not unloaded until arriving at the evening's camping spot. At the time of booking you will be given a Tour Dossier listing in full everything it is advised to bring with you.

Accompanying you on tour will be an Off The Map Tours guide who is the Tour Leader. For a remote trek of several days there would also be a cook, an interpreter and local staff to take care of the pack animals (camels or horses). There will not be a large entourage of porters and support staff as you get when trekking in the Himalayas. Mongolia has a very small population and in the summer months they are busy looking after their herds so we take a very small group of efficient experienced staff.

Transportation to the start of your trek will be organised by us and included in the price of your tour. The driver and vehicle will belong to Off The Map Tours unless you are doing a trek that is far from Ulaanbaatar and you are taking a flight to the start point. In that case the driver and vehicle will be rented locally.

Mongolia's tourist season is from June through to September only. Outside those months it is too cold. At the beginning and end of the season one can expect snow especially at higher altitudes. July and August are the hottest months, but sometimes it might rain. So you have to be prepared for all kinds of weather conditions.

Accommodation & Daily Trek

Depending on trek location, accommodation may be at traditional ger camps or wild camping in tents.

On our Mount Kharkhiraa trek, as for other hikes in very remote areas of Mongolia, we will be camping in tents. This is truly wild camping and at the mercy of nature, but our Force 10 tents are suitable for sun, rain, strong winds or snow.

If you choose to do a tailor-made walking holiday with daily hikes from ger camps, the accommodation is slightly more luxurious, having proper beds, toilet and washing facilities, a restaurant, etc.. We can travel from one ger camp to another by jeep, so that you don't have to walk long distances in areas where the landscape doesn't change much.

Food is always provided on all our tours. Once on trek there are no tea houses or shops where one could buy something to eat, so all food is carried with us from the start, or provided by ger camps if it's that kind of trip.

Video of the Mount Kharkhiraa trek in Western Mongolia

Travel to Mongolia and enjoy a very remote trek in the mountains of Uvs province. The route crosses fast flowing white water rivers and climbs to high peaks amongst the ancient glaciers. The variety and quantity of wild flowers is amazing and the views are stunning. Camels are loaded up each morning to carry all the equipment and are always photogenic. Please note this is old, low resolution video.

2017 Summer Group Tours

We organize several fixed date group trips to Mongolia including mountain biking, motorcycling, horse riding, trekking and cultural trips. You are welcome to join as an individual or if there are several friends together. This is a good way to travel in Mongolia if you want the companionship of others and to meet some interesting people.
