Gobi
Desert Overland Tour
The
fabled Gobi Desert lies in the south of Mongolia.
It is home to some nomadic families and also
to lots of unusual wild life. The Gurvansaikhan National Park, set high above the desert floor,
is home to wild argali sheep and rare birds,
and visitors to the area can walk in the ice-filled
"Eagle's Mouth" canyon. Dinosaur remains
have been found in the region, well-preserved
in the dry atmosphere.
Starting
from Ulaanbaatar we travel by jeep down to
South Gobi Province and across the desert
to Khongoryn Els. This is a spectacular area
where big golden sand dunes meet the high
Altai mountains - a photographer's dream.
Travel northwards towards Kharkhorin, site
of Erdene Zuu Buddhist monastery and the original center of Chinggis Khaan's Mongol Empire before
