Beijing & Trans Mongolian Train Journey 2010

This tour is a wonderful opportunity to see the most important and famous sights in and around Beijing, to visit the ancient Mongolian capital of Kharkhorin and to travel on the Trans Mongolian train from Beijing to Ulaanbaatar, which is the first part of the Trans Siberian railway line.

In Beijing we will visit the Summer Palace gardens which were the summer residence of the Emperor and his retinue, the Forbidden City on Tiananmen Square and the Temple of Heaven, considered to be the perfection of Ming architecture. In the mountains outside the city we go to the Great Wall at Badaling and also travel to see the Ming tombs where most of the Ming dynasty Emperors were buried.

Trans Mongolian Train Journey Route ©OTMT

The train is a very exciting way to enter Mongolia and is a journey lasting approximately 35 hours. We pass through the Chinese autonomous region of Inner Mongolia and across the Gobi Desert to reach Ulaanbaatar. This is a fun journey with lots to see, plenty of other passengers to meet, a nice restaurant car, and comfortable bunk beds in each compartment.

In Mongolia we travel by jeep to Kharkhorin town in the central region. It is difficult to believe that this open, undeveloped, sparsely inhabited valley was once the centre of the greatest empire the world has ever known. Chinggis Khaan established his capital here in the thirteenth century, and later a large Buddhist monastery was built on the same site. Accommodation is at ger camps, located in places of particular beauty.

23 June
Arrive Beijing. Transfer to hotel. Rest of the day at leisure.
24 June
Visit the Temple of Heaven which is an impressive example of traditional Ming architecture. Coach to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, the largest imperial palace in the world. Also visit the Summer Palace on the outskirts of the city.
25 June
Full day coach trip outside Beijing to one of the beautifully restored sections of the Great Wall at Badaling, then to one of the Ming dynasty Emperor’s tombs at Changling.
26 June
Board the train early in the morning and set off northwards, passing through the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia to arrive at the border with Outer Mongolia in the middle of the night.
27 June
As dawn breaks you find yourself crossing the vast expanse of the Gobi Desert. As you continue north the scenery becomes greener and more mountainous. Arrive Ulaanbaatar in the afternoon and transfer to hotel.
28 June
After breakfast head out of the city through the Central Mongolian provinces of Tuv and Ovorkhangai to arrive at our traditional ger camp in the afternoon. Evening explore the area. Overnight ger camp at the foot of the dramatic Khogno Khan mountain.
29 June
Jeep to Kharkhorin, the valley where Genghis Khan established the capital of the Mongol Empire in the thirteenth century. Visit Erdene Zuu monastery, previously the centre of Buddhism in Mongolia.
30 June
Jeep to Elsen Tasarkhai, an area of big golden sand dunes and desert vegetation located only one and a half hours from Kharkhorin. Explore the sand dunes and later in the day ride camels in the dunes.
01 July
Return to Ulaanbaatar. Afternoon free time for sightseeing in and around the central Sukhbaatar Square, or shopping.
