Genghis Khan was born in Dadal near to the Siberian border in the north east corner of Mongolia. This is a beautiful area of mountains, forest, lakes and wide rivers. It is also of immense historical significance and we will visit the places where Genghis Khan lived until he became leader of his people and moved his capital to Kharkhorin in Central Mongolia. The '1400km' ride from Ulaanbaatar to the small village of Dadal is an experience of wilderness and culture that would be hard to beat elsewhere.
Khentii province, a few hours east of Ulaanbaatar, has the historical distinction of being the homeland of the 13th century conqueror Genghis Khaan. Dozens of sites scattered across this province are associated with his life, especially in his birthplace, Dadal.
Located 330 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar Ondorkhaan is the capital of Khentii province. It is located on a wide grassy plain at 1027 meters above sea level, on the banks of the Kherlen river.
This small lake hidden in the mountains just north of Tsenkhermandal village, is the place where the young Temujin was crowned "Genghis Khan" in 1206. The lake is difficult to find and surrounded by muddy water-logged valleys on all sides.
Not too far from Ulaanbaatar, on the road leading east, is the amazing gigantic silver statue of Genghis Khan on a horse. It is 40 meters tall and can be seen from more than 30km away, glinting in the sunshine. Visitors can take a lift to the top for a marvelous view of the Tuul river valley. In the base is a visitor centre and small museum.
Genghis Khaan was born in 1162 on a hill called Deluun Boldog near to the present day Dadal village. Not far away is "Gurvan Nuur", which means "Three Lakes" but actually two of them have dried up. One of the lakes is known as "spleen lake" because legend has it that when Temujin (Genghis Khan) was just about to be born, his mother made soup from the spleen of a horse. There is a large monument erected in 1962 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of his birth. It reads "I have exhausted myself to unite my people. If my body should suffer, so be it ! But let not my people fall into confusion."
The first and last days of the trip are on a good new black topped road, but for the rest of the tour we follow rough jeep tracks on packed mud or rock. There may be some river crossings (depends on recent weather conditions), although we travel out of our way to find bridges to cross the big rivers. All nights on tour are spent in the wild, camping in tents.
Please note that nowadays there are a few competitor motorcycle companies offering the same or similar tours. Some have copied our "Genghis Khan Motorcycle Trail" and website content, given it a new name and advertised it as their own tour, at a cheaper price, perhaps without having tried and tested the route.
Tour starts from Ulaanbaatar, goes north east to Dadal, then returns via Ondorkhaan
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group. Start pre tour meeting. Meeting talks about day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.
Ride on rough jeep tracks through silver birch forest and open rocky hilltops through 'Binder' district to an ancient King’s graveyard in the mountains. There is little left to see of the cemetery, but interesting to note the historical importance of this area. Overnight camping.
Not far from our campsite are some bronze-age rock paintings which we stop to see before riding on to Bayan Adraga village beside the wide 'Onon' river. Ride through a beautiful forested area and camp before the bridge.
Cross the Onon river near the entrance to Onon-Balj National Park, then ride north a short distance to Dadal village where Genghis Khan was born in 1162. Where his mother’s ger once stood there is now a small lake and not far away there is an excellent viewpoint called 'Deluun Boldog'. Drive to Norovlin district to camp.
Drive across the fertile open hills of Batnorov district and through the village to reach Onderkhaan, the capital of Khentii province located beside the 'Kherlen' river. Overnight camping on a mountainside outside the town.
Return to Ulaanbaatar on the good new black paved road, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Overnight hotel.
