On this 4-day circular route we travel more than '1000 km' and will visit the unusual granite mountain at Baga Gazriin Chuluu, temple remains at Ongi Khid and another beautiful mountain, Zorgol Khairkhan nearby the sand dunes at Ovurburd Els. Most of the population in the countryside still live a nomadic or semi-nomadic existence, moving frequently with their herds of animals. Nevertheless, in recent years many families have moved to the city, so we may ride for a considerable distance across the wild and beautiful land without encountering people or vehicles. Accommodation will be at traditional ger camps.
Zorgol Khairkhan mountain is composed of granite rock, being in the Granite Belt of Mongolia. It has an elevation of 1686 meters above sea level and was mentioned in "The Secret History of the Mongols".
The steppe zone of Mongolia is a sea of grass covering 20% of Mongolia and is crucial for the livestock of Mongolia's semi-nomadic herdsmen. These permanent pastures, undisturbed by ploughing or artificial chemicals are rich carpets of sweet smelling herbs, flowers and grasses.
Ongii Hiid was a very large monastery built on the banks of the Ongii river. It was destroyed during the religious purges of the 1930s, but the ruins are still fascinating and attempts are being made to restore the site.
Circular route is south through Tuv "Central" province then around Middle Gobi Province and return to Ulaanbaatar.
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and go to hotel. Afternoon or evening meet the tour leader and rest of group for pre tour meeting to discuss the day by day itinerary and safety issues. Overnight in hotel.
Make an early start to get out of Ulaanbaatar city and onto the road leading south to the Gobi. The road is black-topped for a while, then soon becomes a rough jeep track as it crosses the green rolling hills of Tuv (“Central”) Province. Ride on to 'Baga Gazriin Chuluu', a mountain of unusual granite rocks which are home to ibex, marmots, steppe fox and plenty of birds of prey. Overnight ger camp.
Ride through the picturesque granite rocks of Baga Gazriin Chuluu, then turn westwards and ride through Delgerkhangai village to Saikhan Ovoo. Nestled in the mountains, on a bend in the river, are the extensive ruins of 'Ongii Hiid' monastery. Overnight ger camp.
Drive back north to Ulaanbaatar, stopping on the way for lunch before riding through Sergelen village and arriving in the afternoon. Overnight hotel.
