Mountain Biking Tours in Mongolia

For the adventurous cyclist, a mountain biking vacation in Mongolia is a great way to enjoy an active and challenging ride, to experience a fascinating culture, and to escape from the pressures of life in the Western world. Off The Map Tours specialize in mountain bike tours in Mongolia because our company founder was Olympic trainer for the Mongolian National Cycling Team and many of our Mongolian staff were professional cyclists.

Our Mountain Bikes

We have SCHWINN and SPECIALIZED mountain bikes with front suspension hard tail, in a variety of sizes, available for hire. The tour leader will have the equipment and parts to keep our bikes in good order throughout the tour. You can bring your own bike if you prefer.

Specialized Rockhopper

Built primarily for those driven by adventure and fitness, the Specialized Rockhopper Disc Mountain Bike is ideal for the mountain enthusiast who wants to explore various terrains. Tight, tree-lined trails, open fire roads or wherever the pavement ends. Its precision handling and steering and light yet efficient chassis ensure the perfect blend of fun and function.

Mountain Bike Tour Routes

Routes for Cycling Tours in Mongolia

We have designed all our own routes and know the track, scenery, river crossings or bridges, climbs or technical sections, and camping places for each trip. The combined use of jeeps and bikes allows us to see a substantial part of Mongolia, with its wild and varied scenery.

Cycling Experience in Mongolia

Our mountain biking trails offer unrivaled off-road experiences. Some of the trips are demanding, designed to test experienced mountain bikers, whilst other routes will prove an exhilarating journey possible for those with little off-road experience. Usually we cycle on rough jeep tracks or along horse trails.

Mountain Bike Routes ©BikeMongolia Mongolia is the ideal country for an off-road cycling experience since this country the size of Western Europe has only a few hundred kilometers of black-topped roads and the rest of the land is connected by a network of rough jeep tracks and horse trails linking small communities and seasonal pastures.

Sometimes the tracks are smooth hard-pack, at other times the trail is very rough and rocky. It is common that roads leading up to mountain passes have deep grooves which have been cut away by rain water and it is dangerous (for the bike and yourself) to get a wheel stuck in the rut. There may be some significant uphill stretches, but on the whole these are not impossibly steep for a fit cyclist. Likewise, river crossings are manageable for a rider with some experience. Most rain falls in the summer months of July and August, which can make the ground muddy and quite tricky.

Mountain Bike maintenance ©BikeMongoliaIf you decide to hire one of our bikes, you will see that they are cleaned and serviced by professional staff throughout the duration of your trip. We take good care of our bicycles and never hire them out to anyone who is not doing a fully supported tour with us.

All our vehicles are owned and maintained by us and driven by our own company drivers. We do not hire vehicles from outside, nor do we use drivers who we do not know. Our vehicles include the Kamaz 43114 6x6 expedition bus, Russian UAZ Forgons, Land Rover Defender 110, 130 & and British Reynolds Boughton RB44 Dodge 50 Cargo 4x4 Trucks.

You might see quite a few Russian UAZ Forgon 4 X 4 vehicles in the countryside because these are the best 4X4 people carriers in Mongolia. Just like the famous Land Rover Defender, the style of the forgon has altered little over the past 40 years during which it has served the Russian and Mongolian Militaries. The UAZ 4 x 4 has a basic simple engine making it easy to maintain. They can carry up to 12 people and are fully equipped for off-road conditions.

Your Tour Leader will be one of our experienced Mongolian cyclists who might ride together with you or otherwise will be driving one of the support vehicles. The Leader knows the route, camping places, and interesting sights along the way. If there is anything in particular that you are interested in, for example wild birds or photography, let your tour Leader know and he will keep it in mind.

Accommodation & Daily Riding

Cycling in remote areas and wild camping in the most silent and beautiful spots, is a truly wonderful adventure.

In order to provide you with the most comfortable and suitable accommodation in the wildest places, we have teamed up with Vango and their branch Force 10 to give you a high quality camping experience. We have chosen models such as the Baltoro and the Vango Storm 300 Three Man 4 Season Tent which suit the extreme weather as well as client requirements.

All our tents are kept in good condition and have been proven to withstand heavy rain, strong winds and even snow up in the mountains during the summer. They have double doors with mosquito netting, to allow through draft when it is hot.

The daily riding distance depends on several factors: terrain, weather conditions, riding speed and experience of the group, and of course whether the unexpected happens, which it often does in Mongolia !

Mountain Biking Tour Video

Off The Map Tours started in 1998 doing mountain bike tours, so we've been doing this kind of trip the longest. We've arranged some fantastic trips in remote and beautiful parts of Mongolia and have organised some large group cycling challenge events to raise money for charity. Cycling is the best way to view Mongolia and Mongolian people are really delighted that tourists would come and enjoy their country under their own steam.

2017 Summer Group Tours

We organize several fixed date group trips to Mongolia including mountain biking, motorcycling, horse riding, trekking and cultural trips. You are welcome to join as an individual or if there are several friends together. This is a good way to travel in Mongolia if you want the companionship of others and to meet some interesting people.
